THIS IS THE WAY WE PLAY

performance

Context: Performancelab, Amsterdam, the Netherlands

Video: duration: 6:51 min

‘This is the way we play’ was a performance where Serge lammerts and I were sewing our costumes together. This alternative ritual of intimacy visualized the mixing of identities whenever people have intimate relationships. During the performance, it became clear that I dominated the man because I wore a dress and had no sleeves. I had more freedom of movement in comparison to Serge. He got stuck in a helpless position from the start

Gradually it became difficult to continue the performance because eventually we both lost the control over our personal movements. The performance ended when we couldn’t move at all. After a hour someone from the public had to cut us loose. My dress had visible leftovers of Serge’s suit and the other way around. We left something of our own identity and took something of the identity of the other with us, after leaving our intimate ritual.

We did this performance during a performancelab session (performancelab are workshops organised by marielle Videler) for a small public. The video of the performance was exhibited in some art spaces.
