SEGMENT V, 'CONSTRUCTION'

We were asked to join a group exhibition. The exhibition period existed of three parts, each with its own opening. This Segment was the project for the first exhibition period. The curators of the exhibition placed a grid in the exhibition for the participating artist to react. This grid existed of four white walls of 80 cm. high; these were placed across the space with extensions of 240 cm. high. The exhibition was suppose to reveal the working process of an artist instead of showing finished works, but eventually the exhibition showed more finished works; in our vision a shortcoming to the original concept.

We wanted to show the impossibility of presenting a working process/ work in progres in an static exhibition space. The invited artists didn't knew each other and the works for the exhibition where placed in the space one day before the opening.

We thought it was necessary to actually work in the exhibition space, to create an context related project. Therefor we decided to show the work in progress of the curators of the show. So during a night in the week before the opening we staged their 'construction' site. For this photograph we intensified the characteristics of the exhibition in process by composing the tools, materials, etc. We added some dramatic light and took a photograph with a technical camera. On the opening we showed this picture in a format of 1.80 x 3.30m. and placed it directly attached on the wall.
