SEGMENT II, 'PROJECTSPACE'
Projectspace De 5er was an exhibition space within the context of an artist initiative. We took over the organisation from the previous organisers and rebuild the interior of the space. While we renovated the space we decided to accentuate a part of the history of the space namely the remains of a fire on the ceiling. This interior created a tension between two spaces, the lower space (a white gallery space) vs. the upper space (blackened walls and ceiling). The whole space questions the neutral white cube. The space had a tension; participating artists could react on this or deny it.
The exhibitions within the projectspace were organised without any curatorial pressure. The program evolved naturally and the artist merely came to us with the question if they could make an exhibition. We helped the artist with the organisation; design of invitations, spreading flyer's through the city, helping with the building up period, cleaning the space, standing behind the bar and discussing their concept and ideas about their works. Every two or three weeks there were openings of projects and exhibitions of young artist. There were dinner performances, video screenings and other events.
It became a platform for communication and presentations on art in general. For me it was a good start after graduating from the art academy. Through the projectspace i came in contact with a lot of artists. It expanded my view on art and more specific on the art scene in Rotterdam. In September 2004 we staged the last show. It has been a lively space, where we programmed roughly 33 shows in two years.
